Read previewA staff member at a wildlife center in Richmond, Virginia, had to put on an unconventional get-up while caring for an orphaned baby fox. On Tuesday morning, the Richmond Wildlife Center posted a Facebook video of a staff member feeding a kit while wearing a furry fox mask. In the video, the kit rests on a fox stuffed toy while the staff member feeds it with a syringe. The wildlife center told the AP that the fox kit will soon be transferred to the Animal Education and Rescue Organization, where it will eventually be released back into the wild. This isn't the first time wildlife staff have had to mimic the appearances of the animals in their charge.

The bill would bar counties from usurping state law on agricultural operations, including revoking such county regulations that were previously adopted. “This bill is of specific interest to many Hardy County residents because it contains language that would explicitly address a situation specific to Hardy County,” county planner Melissa Scott wrote in an email to The Associated Press. It’s unknown whether Allegheny Wood Products, which has eight sawmills in the state, wants to resume its efforts to obtain an air permit. Also under the bill, county commissions also would be barred from adopting ordinances that regulate buildings on agricultural land or operations. The credible data that exists on crimes motivated by conspiracy theories shows a disturbing increase. Many of those charged said they had bought into Trump’s conspiracy theories about a stolen election. “Lies, lies lies: They're lying to you over and over and over again,” said Steve Girard, a Pennsylvania man who has protested the incarceration of Jan. 6 defendants. While they may have taken on a bigger role in our politics, surveys show that belief in conspiracy theories hasn't changed much over the years, according to Joe Uscinski, a University of Miami professor and an expert on the history of conspiracy theories. Russia has amplified numerous anti-U.S. conspiracy theories, including ones claiming the U.S. runs secret germ warfare labs and created HIV as a bioweapon, as well as conspiracy theories accusing Ukraine of being a Nazi state.

These days, however, conspiracy theories and those who believe them seem to be playing an outsize role in politics and culture. On the left, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has exploited conspiracy theories about vaccines to wage his own campaign for the presidency this year. The Associated Press has examined the history of conspiracy theories in the United States. “I was suicidal before I got into conspiracy theories,” said Antonio Perez, a Hawaii man who became obsessed with Sept. 11 conspiracy theories and QAnon until he decided that they were interfering with his life. Russia, China, Iran and other U.S. adversaries have worked to amplify conspiracy theories as a way to destabilize democracy further.

From the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been doctor’s orders in this country: If you test positive, stay away from other people, even if you aren’t coughing or feverish. In recent months, however, that rule has been relaxed in two of the unlikeliest places. The new approach has been greeted with trepidation by some health experts in the United States, especially as wastewater data shows a surge in cases driven by a new variant. But many scientists say that Covid has transitioned from a public health crisis into more of a featured virus among an array of respiratory risks. Covid-19 is endemic,” said Dr. Melissa Sutton, medical director for respiratory viral pathogens at the Oregon Health Authority.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers will have the final call on whether he plays again this season for the New York Jets — if and when he gets medical clearance. “Aaron’s a big boy, a grown man, and no one’s going to know Aaron’s body like Aaron knows his body,” Saleh said. Rodgers, who turns 40 on Dec. 2, has repeatedly said his goal is to return late this season. “If I have a great week this week and next week, that could be accelerated,” he said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday. “And I think Aaron’s just icing on the cake.”A return this season by Rodgers would be unprecedented in terms of recovery time.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said his goal is to return from a torn Achilles tendon by mid-December, NBC's Melissa Stark reported during the telecast of the Jets' game at Las Vegas on Sunday night. Rodgers had hinted recently he hopes to return before the end of the season, but this is the most specific he has been. He suffered what was thought to be a season-ending injury in the opener against the Buffalo Bills. However, Rodgers, who was on the sideline, told Stark he “just wasn’t feeling it” about throwing passes during pregame warmups as he has the last several weeks. Rodgers said he has been working on a weight-limiting treadmill, jogging at 50% of his body weight.

The End of Panda Diplomacy?

Mei Xiang and Tian Tian arrived in 2000, about one year after Hsing-Hsing was euthanized due to kidney disease and eight years after Ling Ling’s passing from heart failure. The two new pandas stayed for a decade under the first formal pact, then remained under two consecutive five-year agreements. Mei Xiang gave birth in August 2020, at an age when scientists had thought she would no longer be able to have a baby. Zoos that host pandas outside of China usually agree to send cubs back before they turn 4, and to send adults back when they are elderly — Mei Xiang is 25 and Tian Tian 26. “I don’t want to have a panda pass away outside of China.”

Brad Wilcox implores adults in a forthcoming polemic, “Get Married,” to find happiness and security the old-fashioned way. A critic in New York magazine bemoans the “marital revivalism” of such wedlock proponents, while, online, arguments rage over the practical value of marriage to the individual: Are women happier single or as wives? Why should men even bother to marry, given the calculus of risks versus rewards?

The March implosion of Silicon Valley Bank created a banking vacuum in the startup world. In 2019, the group poached four executives from SVB to work with venture capital funds and their portfolio companies. But these plans were accelerated by the collapse as customers fled to JPMorgan from SVB as well as First Republic, which JPMorgan now owns. First Republic also served emerging venture capital firms, an untapped client segment for JPMorgan's commercial bank. In some aspects, the breakdown of SVB strengthened JPMorgan's appeal to tech upstarts that had previously eschewed too-big-to-fail banks, Smith said.

College-educated adults have seen their earnings rise over recent decades, and they have continued to get married at relatively high rates, typically to one another. One-parent homes generally do not have the same income as two-parent homes, even when we compare the homes of mothers of the same age, education level, race and state of residence. What are the odds that the government will start providing one-parent families with, say, benefits equal to the median earnings of an adult with a high school degree, which comes to around $44,000 a year? As long as that’s the case, income gaps between one- and two-parent homes will be substantial, and income matters a lot for kids’ prospects and futures. But again, it is highly unlikely that government or community programs could ever provide children from one-parent homes with a comparable amount of the supervision, nurturing, guidance or help that children from healthy two-parent homes receive.

The new rules threaten to shutter thousands of short-term rentals and fundamentally redraw what kinds of apartments and homes are used for short-term rentals in New York City. Data site Inside Airbnb estimates there are 40,000 Airbnb listings alone, while an economic study prepared for Airbnb by Boston University Professor Michael Salinger estimates that number is closer to 36,000. One reason for New York City's crackdown is a concern over how short-term rentals squeeze an already incredibly tight housing market. "But a lot of short-term-rental hosts are getting caught up in this lazy sweep." Currently, the average daily rate for New York City listings on Airbnb and Vrbo is $251, according to AirDNA.
